Soundproofing can greatly improve the ambiance in your car by deadening the noise coming from your engine and other parts. There are several key places from where sounds penetrate into your car, so insulating these areas with the correct materials will grant you a peaceful ride wherever you go. All of the materials you need for soundproofing can be easily found in automotive, hardware or music stores.
Soundproofing DIY Tutorial:
Things You'll Need
- Adhesive hood insulator
- Scissors
- Anti-vibration mats
- Contact adhesive
- Screwdriver
- 1 ½ inch thick soundproofing material
- Open the hood of your car and have a friend hold a sheet of hood insulator against the inside of the hood. You need to trim the insulator with scissors so it fits the shape of your hood, without sticking out past the edges.
- Peel off the backing protecting the adhesive on the insulator and press the upper edge of the sheet against the upper edge of your hood. Make sure it is straight and aligned properly so the insulator lies nicely on the inside of the hood.
- Press the insulator against the hood and smooth it out with your hand, working downward until the entire sheet is against the hood. Work out any air bubbles that form as you press the sheet down.
- Cover the inside of the trunk door in the same way as the hood using the insulator sheets. Make sure you don’t put any insulator over the window of your trunk door, if there is one.
- Take all of the mats and rugs out of your car and lay anti-vibration mats down on the floor. You will need to cut these mats so they are flat on the floor.
- Pull the mats up and apply a thick bead of contact adhesive all around the edges on the back of the mats. Make sure there are no gaps in the adhesive so you have a solid, consistent line.
- Press the mats back onto the floor, pushing the adhesive into the car as you smooth them out. You can put your rugs back into the car on top of the mats.
- Trim a mat to fit inside your trunk and glue it to the car in the same way as you did with the other mats.
- Open your door panels with a screwdriver. Each car will have different methods for doing this, but in general you will have to unscrew the hardware on the interior side of the door and disconnect the wiring, which will allow you to just pull the door panel open.
- Cut a piece of 1 ½ inch thick soundproofing material to fit the size of your door panels. Make sure you cut opening for any wires or hardware that is part of the door that need to pass through the soundproofing.
- Close your door panels and reconnect the wiring through the soundproofing.
