What is the Largest Diesel Engine in the World ? 

As of 2025 the worlds largest diesel engine is the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C and this behemoth churns out an unmatched 109,000 Horsepower, yes you read it right!

The Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C is huge in all proportions, its curb weight is 2,300 Tons approx. It holds the title of the Biggest | Largest diesel engine in the world because this baby is 44 ft. Tall and 90 ft. in Length. Well since there aren't any other Huge Diesel Engines to compare it with we will just have to make do with 5 story building and even that would look small compared to the behemoth Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C. This huge diesel engine consists of 14 cylinders which are so big that each cylinder consumes around 7 ounces of Diesel Fuel with every stroke.

Emma Maersk is the loading ship which was first fitted with Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C  in 2006 and since then this engine has been in service. The RTA96-C is perhaps also the largest turbocharged engine in the world.

Up till now only 25 Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C models have been produced and fitted on ocean liners. According to estimates,  we will get to see almost a 100 more of these in the oceans by the year 2022.
